The authorship of “In My Time of Dying” is a bit complex:
The earliest recorded version is by Blind Willie Johnson in 1926, so he’s credited with creating the foundational version.
There’s evidence of similar themes in even older hymns, suggesting it stemmed from a folk tradition.
Reverend J.C. Burnett may have recorded a similar song slightly before Johnson, but it wasn’t released.
