What are the best single player games with immersive story lines?

Everyone is giving you the standard lists. Here's a few that are more under the radar.  Hellblade. The gameplay is ok, but the story is awesome. However, it's not for everyone (very heavy for a video game story).  A Plague Tale Innocence. Similar to Hellblade, it's a short game and the gameplay is just ok, but the story was great in my opinion.  Nier Automota. The story is quite philosophical and there are a lot of layers here. Your enjoyment of this game will probably depend on how deeply you want to immerse yourself. Not for everyone, but it's one of my all time favorite games due to the story and atmosphere (and one of if not the best soundtracks in gaming).

Let's go old school for a bit System shock 2 (think it's on gog) will scare the pants off you and is tough to complete. Great puzzles and some hard choices along the way. Top tip you will want to max out hacking :) Half-life and HL2 (they are getting old now!) HL2 has never been bettered imho as a single player game.

KOTOR and KOTOR 2 are easily two of my favorite games of all time. Just uh... the story is usually better if you go the light side route. Being a bad guy requires you to basically be nonsensically cartoon-villain evil at every opportunity with no subtlety or nuance.

Metroid prime series. The Metroid franchise as a whole is really great, but these three (fourth one on the way) games stand out. Not only do they work really well with each other and the rest of the Metroid franchise, they also are really good standalone titles without any context from any other game. Prime one is easily the best of the three. I hope Prime four will be at least just as good.
